Fold to Center:

Beginnings. The flirtation with the burgeoning do-it-yourself craft movement began in the hot hot sun at Renegade Craft Fair, Chicago 2004. Encouraged by this first cash-and-carry experience, the one-time endeavor awakened a new creative happiness. "More fun than a rummage," Rebel remembers.

Fold to Center is named, with a nod to beloved origami teacher Grandma Tomiko, after a specific origami instruction. This base fold where four corners are folded into the center point, create an X intersection. Similarly, the use of the name Fold to Center is intended to evoke such a meeting place: the intersection of art, design, and craft.

Rebel reflects, "The tragedy in the original naming is that the fourth corner was left unaccounted for. Fortunately this oversight is being corrected and will be called 'business' going forward.

Business indeed. Fold to Center currently sells goods locally and at various craft and music shows across the U.S. (and now online!), while continuing to refine its quirky yet elegant product line.

Janelle Rebel (Cipriano):

Originator of Fold to Center, Janelle enjoys creating quality goods and seeing the happy faces of her customers. She resides in Chicago after a short stint in Muncie, Indiana, preceded by an upbringing in rural Wisconsin. Rebel has her B.F.A. in Graphic Design and is a graphic designer by day and an artist and crafter by night.

She has a love for Japanese papers, fine goods and delicious use of pattern. The pairing of unlike things, humor, and unpredictability are often incorporated into her work. She likes the excitement associated with uneasiness. Although, she gets uncomfortable watching lead characters perpetually fail in romantic comedies. She relishes unnecessary elaboration and dislikes the word "wordsmith."
